"Right when the blind Zooni and the incorrigible flirt of a tour guide Rehaan fall in love, fate takes a cruel turn."
Fanaa is a weird classic that comes out way back in 2006. It's a classic because the songs are iconic, the character chemistry is beautiful and the topic was one that is still widely debated. It's weird because every time I look back at it, I can only remember certain parts of the movie. I must've last seen this movie at least a decade or so ago, it's the only time I return to it. Today, we'll take a look at Fanaa through my lens because this literally is my page.
So uh yeah? Lol. Umm, I guess I didn't remember that Kajol was blind in this movie. The order of the number of scenes was up and down. I also always thought that the part where they came to the city would be much longer than it actually is. I think I fell in love with Aamir's acting once again and Rishi Kapoor is also brilliant. The dialogues pierced my heart and the music danced with my soul (this part sounds really cringe but I have no better way to explain it).
Musical godliness:
There's nothing that makes Fanaa more iconic than its soundtrack. With songs like Subhaan Allah that work their magic on your heartstrings to songs like Chanda Chamke Cham Cham that attract the younger audience to try and sing it. Each track in itself captures the essence of the scenes. Be them the songs or the soundtracks that are playing, every single chord draws more attention to the scene while providing an added sense of gravity to the scene.
Romantic chemistry:
Zooni and Rehaan have some of the weirdest yet attractive romantic development. I personally am not a fan of the type of flirt that Aamir Khan is towards the start, but oh my days was I blushing at his delivery! The writing always had me a bit on my toes, one moment Rehaan is willing to give Zooni everything she wants, another he's getting an earful from her that he dutifully accepts and the next he would be pushing his lifestyle onto her, all of these events within the span of minutes. I think the two make a very cute couple and they bring out the best of each other.
Cuts and Dialogues:
The words in Fanaa are beautiful. The connections are seamless and the cuts are awe-inspiring. There's something special about the conversational style of writing that Fanaa brings to the table. If there's a scene where Rehaan talks about how when one is in love, their sleep disappears which cuts into Zooni talking about a similar thought resonating the same feeling in different ways. Each Shayari adds to not only the story but also to the characters speaking them.
Weak Story Implementation:
Having a genius terrorist should be an addition to a romantic drama. Yet somehow, this plotline only played the role of a dissatisfactory distraction. Rehaan's role as a terrorist gets greatly overshadowed by how the story conveniently makes him perform tasks to push him into situations that work against the romance. The poor fleshing out of this story not only made it look like background noise but also resulted in the lazy writing of numerous other characters. Without the Rehaan terrorist plotline, Fanaa would've been a slightly weaker movie but a more complete one. Here, the movie was forced to undertake a lot of sub-par material within the brilliant things it did.
All in all, I believe that the story and characters simply weren't up to the mark. Had this been a movie with average dialogues or music, it would've been extremely forgettable. And yet, the music, the romance, and the dialogues truly make the movie something I'll refer back to for years to come. The movie is honestly entertaining and gripping even through its shortcomings.
